Bridging the employability gap: why degrees alone are no longer enough

Every year, students finish college with big dreams. They hold their degree with pride. Their families feel happy and hopeful. Most believe that once college is over, a good job will naturally follow.

But for many students, that does not happen.

Weeks pass. Then months. Applications are sent. Interviews attended. Confidence slowly starts to erode. The question arises in many minds: If I studied so hard, why is it still so difficult to get a job?

The truth is. Having a degree is important. But it is not enough.

What is employability?

Employability means being ready for a job. It means having the skills that companies need. It goes beyond marks and certificates. It is about what you can actually do and put to action

Today, companies look for people who can:

  • Speak with clarity
  • Be comfortable working in a team
  • Ready to Solve problems
  • Able to Use computers and digital tools hands-on
  • Manage time well
  • Accept responsibilities

All the students study theory for years.  They complete long journals. They prepare for exams.. But when they enter the job market, they are posed with very different questions.

  • Can you articulate your ideas?
  • How will you handle realtime tasks?
  • Can you communicate with clients?
  • Can you think on your feet?

This is exactly where most of the students struggle and even fail miserably

Why does this gap exist?

In many colleges, learning focuses more on textbooks and exams. Students are taught what is written in books. But real workplaces are different. Corporates expect action, not just answers.

For example:

An engineering student may know formulas but may not know how to use real industry software.
A commerce student may know rationale of various accounting standards but may not know how to analyse real business data.

This gap between classroom learning and workplace needs creates a big challenge. Students feel confused and dejected. Organizations are disappointed with the trainees . Everyone loses time and interest..

The emotional impact

Not getting a job after graduation or post graduation will certainly hurt deep. Students start doubting themselves. Parents feel worried. While batchmates move on.

Youngsters are stressed because they do not understand what went wrong. They studied well and cleared the exams decently. They attempted different campus interviews; however are yet left behind, whilst their colleagues with lower academic ranks were selected by the same organizations.

The problem is not academic intelligence. It is the lack of preparation for the real world.

How techwiz helps students become job ready

This is where TechWiz plays an important role.

TechWiz focuses on employability skills. The goal is to help students transition from only classroom knowledge to acquiring workplace skills as well..

TechWiz trains students in practical skills such as:

  • Effective Resume writing
  • Mock interviews to reduce anxiety
  • Critical Communication skills
  • Basic corporate behaviour
  • Problem solving techniques

Students are handheld and systematically guided through the various selection stages, the do’s and the don’ts at each stage.

This is achieved through ‘practical / hands-on’ sessions which are interactive and hence engaging.

Practice builds confidence. Confidence improves performance.

Building self belief

Many capable students fail not because they lack knowledge, but because they lack confidence.

They hesitate. They overthink. They fear rejection.

Through regular sessions, feedback, and guidance, TechWiz helps students believe in themselves. When students understand their strengths and improve their weaknesses, they start witnessing a real change in themselves.

They stop thinking like job seekers. They start thinking like professionals.

The way forward

India has a large number of young people. This is a big opportunity. But to use this opportunity, students must be skilled and ready.

A degree opens the door. Skills help you walk through it.

Employability is about being prepared for real life work. It is about knowing how to apply what you have learnt.

With the right training and support, students can move from:

  • confusion to clarity,
  • from fear to confidence and
  • from reluctance to seeking initiatives

The future does not belong only to those who are educated. It belongs to those who are prepared.

TechWiz is committed to helping students become truly job ready.
